Multidisciplinary artist and fashion designer, Janie McLaughlin hails from Rivière-du-Portage, New Brunswick, Canada.
She enjoys exploring a variety of mediums and techniques, including acrylic painting, digital creation, sewing, and textile art. By skillfully combining these diverse materials and creative approaches, she brings fluidity and movement to her work—allowing her to develop innovative textures and original pieces that merge her two passions: visual art and textile design. Creative intuition lies at the heart of her artistic practice.
Born with a hearing impairment, creating art is artist Janie McLaughlin’s greatest passion.
The spiral shape of the cochlea (the source of her hearing condition) serves as a recurring inspiration in her artwork. Her interest in art became more defined during her fashion design studies, earning her a college diploma (DEC) in Fashion Design from Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy in 2013. She later completed a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design and Styling at the École Supérieure de Mode of UQAM, Quebec, in 2018.
In 2017, she had the privilege of interning at La Monnaie Theatre in Brussels, Belgium—an experience that inspired her final university project titled Anthropos.
Following this milestone, she created designs for numerous celebrities, collaborated with photographers, and contributed to various runway collections. Many of her creations have also been featured in magazines, including VOGUE Italy in 2019.
In 2023, she moved from Montreal to the Acadian Peninsula in New Brunswick, seeking to reconnect with her roots and continue nurturing her art.
Nature, humanity, traditional textile crafts, and ancestral origins are the forces that ignite her creativity—her inner flame.
